It is often asked why affordable housing is such an important issue?  The reason it is and that it is government policy to provide affordable homes is because not everyone is able to find a suitable home that they can afford on the open market whether this is to rent or buy.  The problem is that there is insufficient affordable housing for everyone that needs it and it's not easy to provide (build) more of it.  Households therefore find homes in the private rented sector with support from Housing Benefit.  Alternatively, for those unable to find an affordable home of their own, sharing with another household becomes necessary.
